Audience theory 1

  1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

This links to the hypodermic  needle model as they are trying to say that video games influences the way people act. In this case, violent video games influence people to cause trouble and do violent things as shooting and fighting may not have a good effect on people and may make them want to commit the same type of violence.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

They are trying to argue that the violent video games that the child plays influenced his actions. People may criticise this front page as it isn't a good influence on children as if a younger child sees this they may be influenced themselves. Some may disagree as well because they think that the video games have no involvement in the child's actions.

3) Do you agree with the hypodermic needle model? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media?

I agree to an extent as children are more likely to be influenced to do what adults do as they are at a learning process, however, i don't think this applies to adults as much because they are more likely to have their own opinion on things. Some may agree that the media influences people as they could really believe what they see.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

The Youtube star Manny Mua fit nicely into the two-step flow model as he can be easily judged without people thinking as they accept it due to the environment or upbringing. Seeing a male doing makeup and acting as a women people would assume he is gay or has feminine features and accept it without thinking

2) How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two-step flow model?

Famous peoples social media accounts have an effect and influence on people as people like the fame and popularity they have, also this can be negative because people may adore these famous people on social media and are most likely to do everything they do as the thing its right

3) Read this BBC profile of Jamal Edwards. How does Jamal Edwards link to the two-step flow model?

Jamal Edwards is a the founder of the online urban music platform SB.TV. Growing up in a council estate in west London Acton Jamal came up from having a Christmas present a camera to owning one of the biggest music platforms in the world SB.TV. By producing rap and hip-hop music Jamal Edwards has attracted a lot of people to listen to the music he has produced gaining recognition

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points.

Star Wars would fit diversion as it is set on different planets and space containing aliens, monsters and super-human powers.

Personal Relationships:
13 reasons why is a good series to class as personal relationships as the show is set in high-school which a lot of younger people in high-school may relate to.

Personal Identity:
Top boy is a show that has 3-4 characters that we dearly care for, the show constantly puts these characters in danger making us feel more emotionally connected to them.

Surveillance:
The weather would be classed as surveillance as we are being informed of information happening in the real world.

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

I think the audience have become dependent on the media and just judge what ever they see and accept it without thinking or accept it because they see others doing it. Sanatan Dave recently won the 2019 Hyundai Mercury prize for his debut album, Psychodrama. Dave thanked his older brother who is in prison for a murder he committed. The media had portrayed Dave in a negative way for thanking his brother who has murdered someone innocent and the media and audience accepted that and were completely against it.

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

Technology over the years has significantly improved changing the world completely. Media is put on over every social platform like snapchat, instagram, titter etc. Now that nearly the whole world has the newest technology media is seen everywhere where people can read it and accept it as they see which has a negative impact on society

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? Why?
I spend majority of my time on my phone which can have a negative impact on my health
