Narrative blog task

 1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

In Cinderella,

Equilibrium: At first she lived a normal life at home with her mum and dad. The is the equilibrium as it is very expected and normal in a movie. There is nothing peculiar about it.

Disequilibrium: When the Fairy God Mother comes to Cinderella to change her outfit and make her look special for the ball, the disequilibrium is that it is something very unexpected in her life and it happens out of the blue.

New Equilibrium: When the Prince falls in love with Cinderella at the ball it is the New Equilibrium as the Prince comes into her life when she least expected it as she comes from a very troubles background. Something like that happening was thought not to happen to women like her.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

Setting: The Bank of Spain.

Characters: A group of of 8 friends.

Plot: The group of friends plan for months to take over the Band of Spain and steal Billions. They set up a heist and kept innocent people inside the bank until they could escape.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

Micheal B Jordan- Plays a strong passionate character in "Black Panther".

Hardin Scott- He plays a very passionate character when he falls in love with a girl in "After".

Jason Momoa: Plays a strong lead in Aqua Man. He is the hero and fights for what he wants.

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

There is an inherent opposition is between good and evil, prisoner and freedom.

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

The fact that the producers are very passionate about getting the perect mail character and not so bothered about he female character role displays dominant ideologies.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

The enigma and action codes give the audience a sense of satisfaction as it gives them the right amount of information and creates a sense of mystery.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:

Episodic narrative (the series) - A narrative composed of loosely connected incidents, each one more or less self-contained, often connected by a central character or characters. It is one way of constructing a plot.

Overarching narrative (the serial)- Narrating a story involves shaping events around an overarching set of aims or effects

Mixed narrative- Some texts use both structures. Some TV shows usually deal with a number of small conflicts which resolve at the end of the episode.

Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)- A narrative sermon is like a pot of soup prepared carefully to be enjoyed by the guests – an experience to be savoured. An expositional sermon is like an explanation of the recipe of the pot of soup. Recognising the difference between narrative preaching and preaching narratives, let’s engage with this analogy briefly.

8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
In advertisements, the audience is able to make up a story by an advertisement by the settings and characters used. They are able to identify the protagonist and antagonist.
