Reception Theory💕

1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert?

Oppositional- : what the producer/creator intends – the ‘natural’ reading - The oppositional reading of this print advert could be consumers seeing it negatively they could interpret from the star power that has been used (50 Cent) is trouble with the police and potentially violence because of his previous issues hes been involved in. People could also come up with assumptions about 50 being "bad" due to his skin colour.

Negotiated-:a middle ground between the producer’s intentions and the audience’s individual views.
The audience may assume all he does is get into trouble and may assume hes bad due to his skin colour and not because hes done anything wrong. On the other he can be seen as inspiring as he had such a terrible upbringing but now hes a famous pop star and hes promoting a brand.

Preferred:How the producer wants the audience to view the media text. The producer whats to exploit the acts of racism to the audience and expose that racism is an act that still happens today. The fact that they have used a man of colour really drives the audience to do something about it. The producers also use 50 cent, because he could be seen as a role model to people as his story is aspiring.

2) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the advert of your own choice that you analysed for last week's work?

The preferred reading for this advert someone feeling some sort of sympathy towards the little girl and therefore acting on it and donating/ texting the number. They also want the consumers to put themselves in her position/ reflect on their lives and how fortune and privileged they are. The negotiated reading is for this advert would be someone acknowledging the fact that they want to build awareness and donate however, they may think that using an innocent child to appeal to an audience is wrong. The oppostional reading  for this advert would be someone who  is completely against this advert."please sponsor a girl today" may be the misunderstanding as it comes across as almost sexist. The girl in this advert is portrayed as  being helpless. This would reinforce certain stereotypes about girls. Some may argue that they could've had a different approaches. Instead of being specific they could've just said "please sponsor a human today "

3) How useful is Reception theory when analysing media products?
When analysing media products, reception theory is very useful. This is because media products that have been presented in films can all have meanings, which build the audience to understand different perspectives of how the producer wants the audience to interpret it.

Answer this last question as a mini-essay, exploring both sides of the argument if you can. Think about the following questions to help you: Do these adverts provide evidence for the idea that audiences are free to interpret messages in a variety of ways - including rejecting them? How might different audiences respond to the adverts you have analysed? Make sure you include your opinion when answering the question then provide evidence to support your view.

Different audiences will have a controversial opinion on each advert i have analysed. For example on the 50 Cent poster, people may take offence to how his finger prints are exposed in such a bold way. Parents may think of this as a way of influencing there children to do bad things, as they look up to 50 Cent and think to be like him and treat him as a role model. It is easier for younger children to be influenced, so them seeing a role model being in trouble with the law could seem like something cool to them. Others may disagree as they think the advert is the perfect way to expose the trouble coloured people go through. I agree with this as, 50 Cent has made a vivid imagine on how he has been treated due to being a black man and how all throughout his life he has struggled. This gives a clear message that racism still happens and needs to be stopped.
